Duties and Responsibilities: Bio-medical engineering is a
sub-specialty of engineering that concentrates on solving biological and
medical problems. Bio-medical engineers work for engineering companies,
hospitals, medical supply companies, and medical technology firms. Common
duties of bio-medical engineers include designing and evaluating devices and
procedures, performing research, and evaluating treatment techniques. Many
bio-medical engineers can specialize in related areas like medical imaging and bio-materials.
Education: A bachelor's degree is a basic requirement for
entering the field of bio-medical engineering; many bio-medical engineers have a
background in an engineering specialty like electrical or mechanical
engineering in addition to bio-medical training. Common coursework in a 4-year
engineering program that will prepare you for a career as a bio-medical engineer
includes bio-medical instrumentation, bio-mechanics, and physics for medicine,
therapeutic medical devices, and biochemical engineering. Many employers expect
bio-medical engineers to have a master's degree as well. Bio-medical Engineers
must be licensed.
